Johnnie Pinkney Byrd, Jr., 63, of Kinston, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie Pinkney Byrd, Sr. and Angela Maroules Byrd.
Johnnie is survived by his wife Linda Schultz Byrd, daughters; Jenny Byrd Thomas and husband Michael, Molly Gail Byrd and special friend Barrett Foster, son Jack Henry Byrd, granddaughter Norah Blake Thomas, grandson Charles “Charlie” Nash Thomas, sister Brenda Byrd Grady and husband Les, nephew Quinton Adam Grady; very special friend Randy Hignite and the members of The Mighty Saints of Soul, and Danny Gooding as well as his dogs Rocco, Dixie and Slim. He also leaves behind numerous Maroules and Byrd family members, as well as a large number of friends and fans.
Johnnie always had a love for many things, but none greater than the love he had for his wife and children. His passion was his music. A devoted musician, bass player and singer for over 50 years. His musical career began in his early teens with several local boys known as The Avengers. In 1970 The Avengers became The Band of Oz. He played with various bands until the 90’s when he formed the band known as The Mighty Saints of Soul.
The family will receive friends and family at Howard-Carter Funeral Home on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Gordon Street Christian Church on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Doug Stokes officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to your local SPCA or to the National Alzheimer’s Association, checks payable to “Alzheimer’s Association” at 8180 Greensboro Drive, Suite 400, McLean, VA 22102.
