Russell Houston, III Obituary

Russell Houston, III, 77, of Grifton, went to be with his Savior on Monday, March 5, 2018.

Mr. Houston was born July 20, 1940 in Louisville, KY. He graduated J. M. Atherton High School in 1958 where he played clarinet in the band. Upon receiving his Bachelors degree from University of Kentucky, Mr. Houston began a 7 year career in the United States Air Force. During his service he served one tour of duty in Thailand during the Vietnam War and rose to the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge in 1969. After his service he attended University of Louisville School of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate degree and then began his long career practicing law in the Town of Grifton. 

Mr. Houston was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kinston where he made many lifelong friends and pursued his love of music through singing in the choir. One of his most memorable experiences was performing with the Schola Cantorum as choir in residence in Gloschester Cathedral in England in 1997. 

Russ Houston was preceded in death by his parents Russell, Jr. and Jane Akin Houston and his brothers William and Douglas Houston. 

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Barbara Houston, his son Jonathan Houston and son and daughter (in-law) David and Cynthia Houston, and grandchildren Taylor and Clay Houston.

Visitations will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home. Celebration of Life service will begin at 2:00 on Friday, March 9, 2018 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. 

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for the benefit of the choir in his memory.
