Ashley Steven Mercer: A Life Lived in Sunlight and Salt Air
Whether casting a fishing line at sunrise, coaching someone through their first catch, or enjoying a weekend softball tournament, Ashley Mercer embraced life fully. Born March 17, 1981, in Pink Hill, North Carolina, he spent his childhood running through fields, making memories with his siblings and cousins, and discovering his love for the outdoors.
Ashley passed away unexpectedly on March 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and adventure. He built a home and family in Pink Hill, where his greatest pride was his children, Ashton Khloe and Summer Allison. He shared with them his love for the simple joys—fishing, hunting, beach trips that soothed his soul, and the satisfaction of a job well done. He was rarely seen without his sunglasses, and if the weather allowed, he was in his Rainbow flip-flops, ready to take on the day.
Ashley was a man of the trades. His career included work with Mercer Drywall, Carolina Restoration, ServPro, and Smithfield Packing, taking pride in his labor and never backing down from a hard day's work.
He is survived by his children, Ashton and Summer; their mother, Andrea Bowdle Mercer; his parents, Kenneth and Evelyn Mercer; his brother, Kenny Mercer; his sister, Angela Mercer; in-laws, Ron and Karen Bowdle; an abundance of nieces and nephews; and many cherished family members and friends. He is now reunited with his paternal grandparents, Raeford and Julie Mercer; maternal grandparents, Hilda “MoMo” and Chester Steven Wetherington; and uncle, Chester Wetherington.
Ashley’s funeral will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 6 p.m. at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, NC, with visitation to follow. His presence will forever be felt in the whisper of the waves, the rustle of the woods, and the laughter of those who loved him.
