Clyde was a native of Pitt County born on January 15, 1934, in Bel Arthur and passed away in the comfort of his Snow Hill home on Tuesday January 23, 2023, just one week after celebrating his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Newby; daughter Kathy Christopher; two sons Sean Robert Martin and Joe Newby, and two brothers R. E. Squires and George Newby. He leaves behind two sons from Maine, Darrell Newby and family, Dutch Newby and family, He also leaves behind a granddaughter, Melissa Martin of the home who tirelessly cared for him in the last year of his life as well as 13 other grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He is a retired Air Force Master Sergent of 24 years. After air force retirement in the early 1970’s he built his home and raised his family here in Lenoir County where he spent another 25 years in the rebuild room of Squires Auto Generator. He loved to travel and every summer went to Maine to visit his family there and attend their yearly fair. He spent many Junes with his family at Kerr Lake, their favorite camping spot. He will be remembered most for his quiet and sassy wit, his love of family, NASCAR, Miller Lite, fat cigars, and word search puzzles.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Westview Cemetery.
