David Sumner Obituary

David Walton (D W) Sumner, 85, of Beulaville passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024, at Kitty Askins Hospice in Goldsboro, NC.

David was a consummate tinkerer and builder.   D W earned some local notoriety by felling trees from his uncle Bill’s forest and building a two-story log home in Cabin, NC.  He followed up his military service with a twenty plus year career in the civil service working as a licensed water plant operator at Camp LeJeune Marine base in Jacksonville, NC.  He also held refrigeration and plumbing licenses.  He wore many hats in his life, from husband and father to cubmaster for the cub scouts, ship senior enlisted advisor, physics instructor at Lenoir Community College, small business owner, square dancer, motorcyclist and connoisseur of Sid’s BBQ, banana splits, hot dogs, carrot cake and all things democrat.

David is survived by his wife, Geneva Lynn Sumner, Maysville; daughter, Teresa Ellen Sumner, Kinston; son, David Lynn Sumner and wife, Michelle, Raleigh; stepson, Mitchell Lee Weatherington, Maysville; mother of his children, Mary Ellen Sumner, Kinston and cousins who are more of a brother and sister, Jesse Sumner, Beulaville, Julia Baysden and husband, George, Chadbourn and his faithful canine companion, Maggie.

The Celebration of Life for DW Sumner will be held at Community Funeral Home in Beulaville on Saturday July 27 from 4-6PM with a ceremony beginning at 4:00PM and casual attire is welcome at the Celebration of Life.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kitty Askins center in Goldsboro, and that casual attire is welcome at the Celebration of Life.
