Kinston- Dorothy Cole Hill, 78, was relieved of the cares of this life on April 24, 2026. She was born in Lenoir County on April 4, 1948, to her late mother, Hazel Mae Byrd Barley. In addition to her mother, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Bryant “Buddy” Hill; grandparents, Sam Byrd and Dollie Byrd Fussell; brothers, Maurice Danny Cole and Charles Ray Cole; and sister, Bonnie Jo Hill Barbour.
Dorothy, or “Dot” as many knew her, had an endearing and infectious personality. From coworkers to shoppers, everyone who met Dorothy was captivated by her outgoing disposition. The friends she made at Buehler Products over 20 years ago, as well as those acquired during her time employed at Pearson-Bert’s Surf Shop, continued to keep in contact with her up until the time of her passing.
Dorothy cherished her family and friends and spent many vacations traveling and making lasting memories. She and her best friends, Dollie Wade and Sheryl Dawson enjoyed their many shopping sprees in Myrtle Beach, Smithfield, and especially Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Though Dorothy loved to cook. Some of her favorite times were when her family was gathered around the table for a meal. Her collards and rutabagas were second to none, and her candied yams were unmatched. More than cooking, Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed reading. She was an avid reader. It was very common to visit Dorothy and find her reading her favorite books.
A devoted and loving daughter, Dorothy spent many years as a caregiver for her mother and grandmother. When her mother needed round-the-clock care, Dorothy moved her into her home without a second thought. When her grandchildren came along, Dorothy relished being their sitter and seeing them daily. Of all her roles and titles, “Grandma” was the one she loved most.
A service of love and remembrance will be held by the graveside at Pinelawn Memorial Park on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Steve Dixon officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Wendy Hill Roberson and husband, David; grandchildren, Courtney Marianna Roberson, David Landon Roberson (Jessica), Lance Bradley Roberson, and Taylor Ayrielle Buckingham (Tim); great-grandchildren, Tyden Scott Buckingham, Aubrey Ayrielle Buckingham, and Hazel Mae Roberson; and brother, Roger Cole (Karen).
Arrangements are entrusted to Howard-Carter Funeral Home, Kinston. Online condolences may be expressed at www.howardandcarter.com.
