Elizabeth Hazel Raikes, 80, of Kinston, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026. She was a loving mother and grandmother whose life was defined by kindness, warmth, and devotion to her family. She had a gentle spirit and was known for being kind to everyone she met, always offering a smile and welcoming heart.
Family meant everything to her, and she treasured the time she spent with her loved ones. Whether gathered around the table or simply enjoying each other’s company, she created a home filled with love and comfort.
Elizabeth also enjoyed giving, especially to those that were in need. She would give you the last of anything that she had. She loved working on puzzles and found peace and happiness in cooking, often preparing meals that brought family together.
She shared a special bond with her beloved dog, Benji, who brought her great companionship and joy.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilson Justice, Jr. and Ethel Whitney, children Frances and Franklin Espi, and granddaughter, Vickey Hughes.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Hughes, son, Edward Raikes, grandchildren, Correy Espi, Amanda Espi, Shatearia, Espi, Ariann Raikes, George Gooding, III, David Hughes, Amanda Espi, and Frank Espi, great-grandchildren, Grace Kwantero, Nadaya Espi, Desiray Espi, Kaleb Espi, Correy Espi, Skylar Espi, Kwantel Espi, Rosabell Raikes, and Ruby Raikes, and great great-granddaughter, Amerika Boone.
Elizabeth will be remembered for her caring nature, her sense of humor, and the love she gave so freely. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
