Evelyn Taylor Winfield, 91, of Kinston, passed away September 14, 2025, at her home. She was born in Lenoir County to the late Walter Larry Taylor and Vicie Hinnant Taylor on February 12, 1934.
Evelyn was a curriculum specialist in reading for the Charles County Board of Education, La Plata, Maryland. She earned the B.S. degree in English at East Carolina University, the Master of Arts in teaching degree at Duke University and was enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Maryland. The past president of the Southern Maryland Reading Council, she was a member of several other professional organizations. Evelyn was the corresponding secretary of Chi chapter, Maryland and has been the editor of the chapter newsletter and chairman of the scholarship and personal growth committees. She was the recipient of a state Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship in Summer 1981.
As an educator in literature, Evelyn loved to read and write. She wrote with much pleasure for the Delta Kappa Gamma and PTA.
If you had the honor of becoming friends with Evelyn, you had a special and loyal friend who cherished her loved ones and friendships.
Family was important to Evelyn. She loved her husband, son, grandchildren, and her best fur friend Lacey with all her heart. Before her family, she loved her Lord and her church. She taught Sunday School and attended Ann Street United Methodist church faithfully. Camping and traveling were also things that Evelyn enjoyed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Welford “Sonny” Edward Winfield, brother, Larry D. Taylor and wife Billie and sister in-law, Georgia Taylor.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Edward Scott Winfield (Ann) of Kinston, grandsons; Jarrett (Kayla), Hunter (Cassidy), and Taylor (Amber), great-grandchildren; Harper, Noah, and Hollis, and siblings; sue Johnson (John) and Ronald Lee Taylor.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.
