Fred Jennings Griffin Jr.

Fred Jennings “Tool Man” Griffin, Jr., 80, of Grifton, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at UNC Lenoir Healthcare. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Griffin, Sr. and Alethia Davenport Griffin. 

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Fred retired from International Paper Company, and he enjoyed logging, doing mechanical work, and flea markets. He was known as the “Tool Man” at the Ayden Stockyard, where he loved meeting new friends and making memories.  

Fred is survived by his wife, Mary Humphrey Griffin; sons, Fred Jennings Griffin, III (Mary Lou), Henry Clint Griffin, Thomas Earl Griffin (Evelyn), Billy Joe Griffin (Nicole), Buddy Allen Griffin (Jennifer), Robert Jones (Kathy), and Stacy Humphrey (Mallory); daughters, Tammy Jo King (Joel) and Penny Sauls (Tim); grandchildren, Billy Joe Griffin, Jr., Mason Riley Griffin, Nathan Lee Pittman, Skylar Tollefsrud (Aaron), and Alex Griffin; many special great-grandchildren, and several other close family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2023 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home with Pastor Jimmy Horne officiating. Visitation will follow the service. A private burial will be at a later date.
