Gene Ernest Bass, 58, of Kinston, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026. He is survived by his mother, Florence Jeanette Hawkins; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Bass; son, Richard Ernest Bass; sisters, Jini Ashley (and Sam Casey) and Patricia Lee Kephart and husband Rev. David Kephart; brother, James Richard Magruder and wife Gina; and nephews, Kevin and Kyle Chirico, Daniel, Josh, James and Josiah Kephart, and niece Kaci Magruder.
Gene was known for having a kind heart and a warm, loving personality that could bring comfort to anyone. He never met a stranger and could truly make friends anywhere. With a big heart, Gene would share anything with anyone that needed it. He had a special gift for helping others.
He found happiness in the simple things in life. Riding his bicycle and spending time enjoying his favorite hobbies, including collecting trinkets and appreciating unique items, was his favorite pastime. He also had a special interest in collecting knives.
Music was an important part of Gene’s life, especially rock and roll, which brought energy and joy to many of his days. He also loved his bandanas-something that always brought a smile to those who knew him.
More than anything, Gene will be remembered for his loving spirit, easygoing nature, and the way he made others feel valued.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Hillside Original Free Will Baptist Church in Grifton, N.C, with Rev. David Kephart officiating.
