Glenda Benson Smith of Kinston, NC passed away December 23, 2024, at UNC Health. She was born on September 8, 1941, to George and Christine Benson.
Glenda dedicated her life to education and the enrichment of others. She earned her teaching degree from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC and went on to serve the Lenoir County Schools for over 40 years. Glenda’s passion for teaching and her commitment to her students left a lasting impact on many generations. Even after her retirement, the lessons she imparted continued to resonate within the community.
Glenda was a lifelong member of Rivermont Baptist Church, where she found great comfort and friendship. Her faith was an important aspect of her life, guiding her through many challenges and celebrations.
Family was central to Glenda’s life. She is survived by two sons. Jerry Smith III and Stanly Smith; sister, Anne O’Briant; daughter-in-law Donna Baldwin and her daughters, Courtney and Kaitlyn Baldwin; close personal friend Elaine Godwin; grandson, Christopher Smith; great grandson, Abram Smith and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry Herman “Buster” Smith, Jr. and her sister Sherley B. Smith.
Glenda loved cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Cherishing moments with her boys above all. Her home was often filled with laughter, stories and the joy of togetherness.
Her legacy of kindness, dedication and love will continue to live on through her family, friends and the countless students she taught throughout her career. Glenda will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a beacon of light in the lives of those she touched.
A memorial service will be held at Rivermont Baptist Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 4, 2025 with Pastor John Morton officiating.
