James Michael Kohler

James Michael “Mike” Kohler, age 78, of Kinston, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Greendale Forest Nursing Home in Snow Hill. Mike was born in Kinston on May 23, 1947, to John Anthony Kohler and Ola Ipock Kohler.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother John Alston Ipock, Sr. and son John Michael Kohler.

Mike was the former editor of the Kinston Free Press and worked for the little bank and Branch Bank.

He was a very talented musician and played with many local bands. They played music all over eastern North Carolina.

Mike is survived by his daughter Ana Kohler and two of his best friends, Billy Moore and Burnie Smith, who took care of him for over 5 years while he was in the nursing home.

Graveside service will be held Monday, April 13, at 2pm at Westview Cemetery in Kinston with Pastor Mike Parker officiating.
