Joyce Wetherington Obituary

Joyce Conner Wetherington: A Heartfelt Farewell to a Beloved Matriarch

With profound sorrow and boundless love, we announce the serene passing of Joyce Conner Wetherington on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at ECU Health. Surrounded by her loving family in her final moments, Joyce's departure marks the end of an era filled with unwavering dedication, boundless love, and the joy of togetherness that she so effortlessly wove into the fabric of our lives. Born into the embrace of Lenoir County and cradled by the late James Conner and Annie Belle Conner, Joyce's life was a testament to the beauty of devotion and familial bliss.
Joyce, alongside her beloved husband, the late Walter Woodrow (Woody) Wetherington, built more than a home; they crafted a sanctuary of warmth and jubilation, becoming the very heart of the family's most treasured gatherings. Joyce's culinary masterpieces and her spirited presence were the highlights of every celebration, leaving a legacy of cherished memories in their wake.
Her journey through life was characterized by a profound love for her children, whom she supported with relentless passion and dedication. Joyce's legacy lives on through her children and their spouses: Brenda Simpson; Judy Edwards (Don); Hardy Wetherington (Kitty); and Woody Wetherington (Susan). She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Linda McClelland, and cousin, Alice Kivett, with whom she shared a deep bond.
After a rewarding career at Dupont, Joyce pursued her passion for fashion, opening a bridal boutique that soon became a beacon of joy and elegance within the community. Her boutique was not just a store; it was a place where lifelong friendships were forged, and dreams were realized, embodying Joyce's warmth and generosity.
A vibrant life, Joyce's days were enriched by friendships, laughter, and the pursuit of happiness. As a proud member of the Red Hat Society, her adventures with fellow members were filled with joy and sisterhood. Her card group and the Lovick’s Saturday morning breakfast group were sources of continual delight, showcasing her love for camaraderie and connection.
Joyce's passion for life extended beyond her immediate community to the serene embrace of the beach, a place that held a special spot in her heart. She cherished the times spent by the ocean, where she would bring her lady friends for days filled with shopping, card games, and laughter. It was in these moments, sitting on a porch swing, basking in the sea's breeze and salt air, that Joyce found profound joy and peace. These beach getaways were not just escapes but cherished rituals that reflected Joyce's love for nature's beauty and her knack for creating memorable experiences with her friends. Her spirit was as free and expansive as the ocean itself, and these seaside moments were a testament to her zest for life, the joy of friendship, and the simple pleasures that brought her immense happiness.
Embracing a new chapter, Joyce moved to the Herritage Elite Estate five years ago, where she continued to embrace life with open arms, cherishing both old friendships and new acquaintances alike. Her active participation in community activities there spoke volumes of her zest for life and the love she had for her community.
A faithful member of Spilman Memorial Baptist Church, Joyce found strength and solace in her faith, which guided her through life's journey.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Mike and Lori Ingalls at Heritage Elite for their exceptional care and kindness and to Tonya and Rebecca, whose care for her at Herritage Elite went above and beyond. The support and professionalism of the staff at ECU Health, particularly Dr. Mani Padi and the ICU nurses were sources of comfort during her final days and the family is so appreciative of their loving care for her.
Joyce's love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew no bounds. She is survived by her adored grandchildren: Jonathan Stallings (Jessica), Cameron Stallings (Kari), Jack Edwards, Claire Edwards, Meredith Clement (Carter), Kristin Hamilton (JD), John Wetherington, Hilary Wetherington, and Hailey Wetherington, and her cherished great-grandchildren: Riley, Lily, Weston and Whitley Stallings; William and Rachel Edwards; Clara, Alex, and Nathan Clement; and Kathryn Hamilton.  Her love also extended to her numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
