After graduating from Granger High School in Kinston, NC, Cynda attended the Women’s College at UNC-Greensboro earning a degree in English and a Masters in English from Duke University. She taught High School English for a few years before deciding to pursue a career in logistics for the federal government. She enjoyed various roles in the federal government that took her to Hampton Roads, VA, Fort Monmouth, NJ, and Alexandria, VA . While in Alexandria, she earned an MBA from George Mason University and spent the remaining years of her career providing logistics leadership for the US Army.
Cynda loved her time in Alexandria, VA entertaining friends and enjoying the great restaurants and museums. She was an avid reader, a Trivia wizard, a giraffe enthusiast, a dog lover, enjoyed listening to great music including songs by Sunny Turner and anything from the 1960s, traveling with her extended family, and spoiling her nieces.
In 2001, she moved back to Kinston to enjoy retirement and be closer to her mother. She used her talents to teach children how to read at the Kinston public library, as well as volunteer at the Lenoir County Historical Association, Queen Street Methodist Church, and the Rotary Club.
The family would like to thank her family physician, Dr. Kenneth Johnson as well as Faye Simmons and her home health providers for their dedication, compassion, and care during her battle with Parkinson’s Disease. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Queen Street Methodist Church or to Lenoir County SPCA.
