Mike Joseph Lindner, 93, of Kinston, passed away on Wednesday, November 8th, 2023, at UNC Lenoir healthcare. He was preceded in death by his parents Michael Lindner and Marianna Miszkewicz Lindner, three sisters: Teresa Fitzgerald, Judy Lindner, Gina Lindner and brother, Joseph Lindner.
Mike was born in Kruszewo, Pila, Poland in 1929 where he enjoyed his younger years on a farm, attending school and being a Boy Scout. After WWII, where Mike and his family were prisoners in a concentration labor camp for 6 years, he and his family came to America, and he worked on a dairy farm until joining the Army in 1951. While serving in the Army, Mike was an interpreter, speaking 5 languages, a medic and locksmith. Before his deployment to Germany fate stepped in and he met the love of his life, Maria, at a dance where she told him that he was going to be her husband. They became engaged through the mail and 2 years later when he returned from deployment, Mike and Maria were married and spent the next 70 years together. After his Army career and honorable discharge, Mike was employed by E I DuPont de Nemours where he worked for 40 years and retired from. During those years Mike obtained his high school diploma, a degree in architecture and drafting and an associate degree in art. A faithful member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church for 70 years, he taught art class at Christ the King school, was a faith formation instructor, a leader, a counselor, a volunteer, a godfather and friend to many and a strong, steadfast, spiritual person within the community. He devoted many years to his sign company where his works can be seen all over Kinston. After completing his book, Leaving Terror Behind, Mike traveled and spoke to hundreds of people about his life, the war and how important it is to respect your freedom, your country and to treat people with loving kindness. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family.
Mike is survived by his wife, Maria Lindner, his daughter and her husband, Angela and Jimmy Weldin, his granddaughter, Jessica Weldin and her fiance, Dustin Williams, his grandson and great granddaughter, Zachary and Brittney Weldin and sister, Sylvia Mutton.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 13, 2023, from 11:30am to 12:30 pm at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with funeral services to begin at 1:00pm with Father Joseph Yaeger officiating. Buried will follow at PineLawn Memorial Park with Military Honors.
