Perry Michael Lychak, 65, of Kinston, NC, formerly of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. He was born April 29, 1958, in Glendon, Alberta, Canada to the late Peter Lychak and Annie Ratzoy Lychak.
Perry graduated from W P Wagner High School in Edmonton in 1976. He began his secondary education at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Washington, where he played baseball as a left-handed pitcher and earned his associate degree from 1976-1978. He continued his education completing his Bachelor of Science degree at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN, and served as a pitcher on their baseball team from 1978-1981. Perry also obtained his Master of Education from Indiana State University.
Notably, Perry played for the Canadian National Team in the 1979 Pan American Games, the 1980 Amateur World Series and in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup.
A highlight of Perry’s pitching career was when he pitched a three-hitter win for the Canadian Team in the Intercontinental Cup baseball tournament in August of 1981 defeating the defending champions, Cuba.
Perry then went on to sign in 1982 with the Toronto Blue Jays and was assigned to the Kinston Blue Jays farm team where he would spend his pro career. Upon leaving professional baseball, Perry began his teaching career at Woodington Middle School and later at the South Lenior High School. He fondly taught and coached many talented and eager students and athletes in baseball and football within the school district, as well as several American Legion Teams. Perry always loved sharing his experiences and knowledge of the games with his students.
Perry is survived by one brother and two sisters, Harry Lychak (Brenda Morris), Debbie (Ken) Toker and Valerie Lychak; five nieces and nephews, Tyler, Kimberley, Corey, Colin and Nicole; several great nieces and nephews as well as loving Cousins.
He is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Annie, as well as a brother, Lawrence.
Services will be held at Woodington Middle School Gymnasium in Kinston, NC on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 11:00 am; with a celebration of life in Edmonton to follow at a later date.
