Thomas Roosevelt Taylor, 90, peacefully passed away on August 26, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, finding solace in his faith. Growing up in Deep Run, he spent his early years working in the tobacco fields on the family farm.
During high school, he shone as a basketball star and also drove a school bus. It was during this time that he met Peggy Wilson, the love of his life, and they soon tied the knot. Thomas joined the Army to provide for his family and country, taking up the role of a cook before becoming a supply clerk stationed in Germany. As their family grew, he decided to leave the military to become a Policeman and ABC Officer in Lenoir County. Later, they moved to New Bern, where Thomas ventured into the restaurant business and later sold AFLAC insurance.
His devotion to family was evident in many ways, such as installing a pool for his grandchildren's enjoyment. He was known for his stories, enjoyed golfing, and cherished each moment of life. Thomas was famed for his delicious steak sandwiches and Tom’s Chocolate Covered Pecans. His humor and positivity were a beacon for his family and friends.
Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, William Taylor and Gertrude Turner Taylor, his wife Peggy Ann Wilson, his granddaughter Sara Beth Webber, and his siblings Allen Taylor, Woody Taylor, Pearl Greene, and Grace Thompson. He is survived by his children: Mike (Carol) Taylor of Gardner, Thomas R Jr (Betty) Taylor of Cove City, and daughter Jan (Jerry) Andrews of New Bern. He leaves behind 10 Grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Funeral service will be held on September 1, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 1207 Forest Drive, New Bern, NC. Visitation will begin at 10 am, followed by the service at 11 am. The interment will take place at 2 pm at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Shriners Children Hospital, a cause close to Thomas' heart. The arrangements are being handled by Howard-Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
