Yvonne Churchill Holland, 84, passed away Friday, January 29, 2021. She was born June 2, 1936, to John Alvah and Mildred (Joyner) Churchill. She was raised in Rocky Mount, NC, and was presented as a debutante in 1954. She graduated from Duke University in1957 after attending the Nursing Program. She married James Holland on July 12, 1958. They relocated to Sylva, NC in 1969, and lived there for close to 50 years. During that time, she served as Director of Child Development for Western Carolina University, working there for most of her career. She was a passionate volunteer for her community, who worked at the Sylva Chamber of Commerce in the Visitor Center, and was also a member of the Sylva Garden Club and Jackson County Newcomers’ Club. She was a consummate caregiver who always put others first and took care of everyone around her. She loved gardening, reading, doing puzzles, baking, and watching the birds. She was known for the beautiful flowers in her yard, especially roses and azaleas. She is survived by her daughter Dee and son Scott (Aimee); brother John Churchill, and sister Kay Reeves (Jim); and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 11a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2021, at Lane’s ChapelUnited Methodist Church in Dover, North Carolina, with Pastor David Harrington officiating. Burial will follow in Lane’s Chapel Cemetery.
